Mighty Mallet of Baking Soda

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) lives up to the image on the Arm & Hammer’s box; it is the ultimate heavyweight workhorse medicine that every healthcare professional and parent should use to diminish toxic poisoning from the Gulf disaster. Combining this with other strong but basic natural substances like magnesium chloride, selenium and iodine offers us the best chance of weathering the toxic storm that continues to build over the Gulf region.
Sodium bicarbonate is the number-one item in any protocol to treat exposure to harsh chemicals coming from the oil disaster. The government should step in to direct supplies of bicarbonate into the area. Millions of pounds should be immediately distributed and stockpiled since supplies at the local supermarket are not going to last long when the public catches on to the danger and what to do about it. The very best treatment, when one first notices a foul smell, foul taste or flu-like symptoms, is to jump into a bath with several pounds of bicarbonate and magnesium salts.
So deep are the protective, buffering and neutralizing properties of bicarbonate that it is used even with radiation exposure to protect the kidneys and other tissues. In a world that is already overexposed to uranium and mercury, sodium bicarbonate becomes even more important because mercury and uranium oxide directly attack the nuclear material and mitochondria of the cells.
The oral administration of sodium bicarbonate diminishes the severity of the changes produced by uranium in the kidneys. And it does this for all the heavy metals and other toxic chemicals including chemotherapy agents, which are highly lethal even in low dosages. Since depleted uranium weapons were used starting in the first Gulf War, the United States has polluted the world with uranium oxide and it is showing up more and more in tests doctors perform. With a half-life of several billion years we had better be prepared to get used to dealing with the toxic effects and help our bodies clear it more easily through the kidneys.
What does bicarbonate really do? Baking soda is like a strong janitor mopping up the messes and carrying the poisons away. This janitor protects tissues and leaves an alkaline film or trail behind to make sure everything stays safe. In medicine, sodium bicarbonate is like the cleaning and security man proven loyal through decades of faithful service and it can be brought in to provide some sort of protection in cases where people are suffering from radiation toxicity.
So useful and strong is sodium bicarbonate that at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, researcher Don York has used baking soda to clean soil contaminated with uranium. Sodium bicarbonate binds with uranium, separating it from the dirt; so far, York has removed as much as 92 percent of the uranium from contaminated soil samples.
Blaise W. LeBlanc, a former research chemist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, identified the toxic byproduct hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) of high fructose corn syrup, which is fed to honey bees, as a potential culprit in colony collapse disorder of bees. LeBlanc has a solution to minimize HMF toxicity: By adding bases (such as sodium bicarbonate, lime, potash or caustic soda) to HFCS, the pH rises and HMF levels drop.
Sodium bicarbonate can safely remove paint, grease, oil, and smoke residue, decreasing workers’ exposure to harsh chemicals and eliminating much of the hazardous waste associated with other cleaners. “Sodium bicarbonate is able to clean in areas where other substances pose fire hazards because baking soda is a natural fire extinguisher,” says Kenneth Colbert, a general manager for Arm & Hammer. This is the reason it’s used by oncology centers to control chemo agent spills, and it’s actually used intravenously to protect patients from the hazardous toxicity of chemotherapy.
Sodium bicarbonate is found in various places around the world in the form of mineral deposits. The uses of this natural cleaner are endless. It can be used to treat illnesses as well as clean a variety of household items. Sodium bicarbonate is often found in household cleaners and laundry detergents because of its ability to lift dirt and grime and its efficacy in eliminating unpleasant odors. It is no surprise that this magic powder is the most effective and economical way to clean oil-stained clothes.
Bicarbonate and Magnesium Emergency Medical Baths
Simply put, there is nothing like a hot soak in a magnesium chloride bath with bicarbonate before bed. Such soaks are heaven on earth for people who suffer from insomnia and the feelings of restlessness in the limbs. The same goes for what I call magnesium massages where someone rubs magnesium oil directly into the body. It turns out that these kinds of casual treatments can be intensified to the point of being full-blown medical treatments. For emergency purposes, 1 to 5 pounds of bicarbonate (for children much less) can be used as long as that amount is balanced with magnesium salts found in Dead Sea salt, Epsom salts and magnesium chloride bath flakes (1 to 5 pounds as well).
The point is that if you are feeling any of the symptoms being reported in the Gulf region emergency, sodium bicarbonate medical baths should be immediately initiated if you want to neutralize the hazardous toxicity. The United States government should organize a worldwide effort to provide to the citizens of the Gulf area large tonnages of sodium bicarbonate and magnesium salts. Clay also should be provided for both internal and external cleansing. The same goes for glutathione suppositories, which should also be taken instantly upon symptom onset, and plenty of spirulina should be on hand and taken regularly. The key to avoiding long-term harm is to help the body deal with the chemical assault at the very moment one notices foul smell, foul taste or flu-like symptoms.

My father is bedridden. I can’t get him in the tub. Maybe you had to work with someone in that situation before. There must be many people in the Gulf coast in a similar situation. Any ideas on a way to get him at least some of the benefits of a soak in the tub? I massage the magnesium oil in, but I don’t know how I would give him the benefits of a soak in a bathtub that has the baking soda.
Kevin,
If he can sit on the edge of the bed you could do a footbath with sodium bicarbonate. He could also take it orally.
Sincerly,
Claudia French RN, LPHA
Wow – you say to use 1-5 lb. PER BATH? We obviously can’t keep that up! How on earth would the supermarkets ever be able to stock the baking soda??? A cup in a bath – maybe with less water should do. I think the foot baths are a good idea, plus taking a little internally and using enemas. I use magnesium oil rubbed on my skin – several applications when needed.
So is there a home use method like buying baking soda and Magnesium chloride and mixing it together and finding a dose for those in the Gulf area breathing the toxins. What ratio-amount of baking soda and magnesium for oral as well as soaking in a bath? Thank you.

Can people with high blood pressure take baths with baking soda??
Annette,
Yes, but monitor your blood pressure . Studies have shown that sodium bicarbonate will not elevate blood pressures like sodium chloride does.

Is this good for toenail fungus?
Julie,
Some sources claim that sodium bicarbonate works very well for toenail fungus, but you have to be very persistent. Make a paste and apply several times/day.

Can you give cats sodium bicarbonate when they are ill?
e.g diarhea, not eating etc
If so how much and in what cases shouldnt you use it?
Thanks
Lucky,
Exerpt from eHow site:
According to MedicineNet, sodium bicarbonate reduces the amount of acid in the stomach and can relieve the discomfort associated with heartburn and indigestion. It can help your pet with stomach ailments. Check with your veterinarian first before giving sodium bicarbonate to your pet.
During warmer months, when pets spend more time playing outdoors, the chances of bee stings increase. Bee stings commonly occur in the mouth, as pets often try biting flying insects. If you notice a bee has stung your pet, mix enough sodium bicarbonate with water to create a thick paste and apply it to the stung area. The sodium bicarbonate will cleanse the area and reduce the pain from the sting.

To Tammy,
I think the idea is for us to start building up a supply of baking soda now, while you don’t need it for an emergency, as it really will last indefinitely when moisture is kept away. Use it as you usually do (ie: cooking, baths, cleaning, etc.) and keep restocking as you go. The wonderful thing is that a 4lb. box only costs about 2 bucks. Pick up a box a week when you shop for groceries and you probably won’t even notice the cost.
Hello I HAVEbeen suffering from severe candida albicans(total yeast throughout the body and severe acne for years.
Baking soda taken orally at least 3 times a day has been a god send.
I hope this will help alot of people suffering from any yeast problems excema and psoriasis.
Thank you,
Tara
Tara says 1/4 tsp. in a 1/2 of a 8oz. cup with warm water and stir.
Acid in the stomach is a good thing.
A suggestion is to buy some Vege Caps I am able to pack them
with baking soda and take them often. Much easier than having to drink in 8 oz of liguid. The only side effect is burping once or twice
Hi there!
I’m wanting to take bicarb for chronic candida. Can you take 1 tsp in maple syrup 3x a day? I’m a bit wary as I’ve read info regarding bicarb saying it is dangerous to ingest because it can accumulate in the brain and cause damage.
Is this true?
Evan
Hi Evan,
Taking excessive amounts of bicarbonate is not a good idea…when using bicarbonate for any reason, you need to be doing a daily pH check and not allowing pH to go over 7.3. If it does you are risking alkalosis which causes many other problems. The general instructions for sodium bicarbonate are not to take more than 7 doses of 1/2 tsp each per day for people under 60. and only 3 half tsp if over 60.
Bicarbonate can accumulate in the brain but ususally this is very temporary if directions are followed.
Instructions vary if you are treating for cancer. Taking 1 tsp at a time mixed in maple syrup may be a bit strong and cause bloating, gas and other symptoms.
Thank you for your response Claudia. I have a couple more questions if I may. Why does bicarb accumulate in the brain? Is it simply an excess? Is this reflected in the pH level, i.e. does it accumulate in the brain because you become too alkaline?
If I were to take 1-2 tsps a day, would that cause an accumulation?
Would 1 tsp a week be of any benefit for candida and/or suspected cancer?
What is the best way to take it? Heated/not heated? In juice/syrup?
Many thanks,
Evan
Excess Alkalinazation of the body will be reflected in your pHm and attempts by the body to get back into balance will take place, especially by respiratory and kidney excretion of excess bicarbonate. There are many other causes for this which you can find out about by doing a google search. You should also read Dr. Sircus’ book on Sodium Bicarbonate at: http://publications.imva.info/
You must check your pH daily and keep it at or below 7.3. Above that amount indicates excessive alkalinazation and the possibility of problems unless you are treating cancer which requires a more aggressive tyreatment. Anything over pH of 7.3 might cause accumulation and the initiation of the body’s protective actions to rid the excess bicarb. Once a week use of bicarb would probably not benefit candida or cancer prevention, but again, ph should guide you.
We recommend simply mixing bicarb in water, not heated for general use.
Hi.
I am wondering if you need to take some extra precautions if you use bicarbonat with only one kidney. And what dosage would you recomend for a person with neuroendocrine cancer with matasases in spine with one kidney. If it is possible for you, I would be grateful if you also could send me the answer by email in addition to posting it on this website.
Thanks. Kirsti
Dear Kristi,
I believe many people with only one kidney use bicarbonate of soda for various things. We are told that one kidney will protect us just as two would. But the literature tells us that extra protection should be given to protect this lone kidney. For example you need to watch your blood pressure to make sure it is not putting undue stress on this kidney. It is generally recommended that bp be held at 120/80 or below for people with one kidney. While many believe that bicarbonate can elevate blood pressure due to the sodium, this needs to be watched very carefully and used under the care of a qualified healthcare professional. However there are studies showing that use of bicarbonate of soda will not raise blood pressure. Sodium bicarbonate is being recommended as kidney protective for many who already have chronic kidney disease
For specific dosing of bicarbonate you should seek consultation with Dr. Sircus, since you are also dealing with neuro-endocrine cancer along with the one kidney. Much more information would be needed from you. Please contact [email protected] to arrange for this.
Hi,
Is there aluminium in Bicarb of Soda? As a free flowing agent.
Dear MsTree,
There is no aluminum in 100% Bicarbonate of Soda, but make sure the package states it is 100% Bicarb of Soda.
However there might be aluminum in baking powder which is totally different than baking soda (bicarb of soda).
Read the labels carefully.
Ms. Claudia, read again Dr. Sircus’ article Mighty Mallet of Baking Soda and feel I should ask if he recommends Baking Soda (1 to 5 pounds) and Magnesium Chloride Bath Flakes, Magnesium Salts and Epsom Salts (1 to 5 pouinds each) (special emphasis on the word “and”.
Dr. Sircus doesn’t think we should bathe in the Baking Soda and water without the other ingedients he mentioned also included? It seems like we could have 20 pounds of powder and 30 gallons; almost like a paste bath, and I’m sure he didn’t mean that. Would you clarify, please? George Hickman.
Dear George,
Dr. Sircus did not intend to imply that all of what you mentioned is needed together at the same time in a bath. He was giving a range of possibilities. Magnesium chloride can be mixed with sodium bicarbonate ….and the amounts will vary according to your intention (rexaxation vs. heavy detox). Magnesium chloride is preferred over magnesium sulfate (epsom salts) and we do not recommend using them together at the same time. The larger amounts of sodium bicarbonate and magnesium chloride added to baths is for a heavy detoxification from radiation and/or toxin exposures.
Hope this clarifies for you!
For cancer that matasticide in the stomach. What would be the most effective amount for an 89yr person.we tried 1/2 tsp baking soda with 3tsp molasses but the taste was to strong. so we switched to 1/4 tsp baking soda with 1 1/2 maple syrup 2x a day, which tastes better. were trying to ajust slowly. But we don’t know if the amount is effective. Can you recommend dosage. Also person burping after every meal. trying lighter meals.Digestive enzymes anti acids nothing works
Nancy,
The ratio of mmolasses to baking soda should be 3:1…three parts molasses or 100% maple syrup to one part baking soda. Yes, the taste will be strong. Water can be added to dissolve the baking soda before adding the molasses.
The best way to keep track of whether or not it is effective or the dosage or frequency needs to be raised is by checking her pH daily and it should show that its going up. You wan’t the pH to get up to about 8 for a few days and then need to stop and take a break for a week or so.
Does the sodium from sodium bicarbonate get transdermally absorbed when you soak your body in sodium bicarbonate/magensium chloride bath? Thank you.
Dear Jazza ,
yes the sodium can get absorbed, according to one of our readers, this happens when sodium bicarbonate and magnesium chloride are put in a bath together and the the solution then becomes one of sodium chloride and magnesium carbonate. We are researching this now and will give you more information when we have it. If you are salt sensitive, check your blood pressure frequently to be sure it isn’t causing increases, which some studies show that only sodium chloride will do, and not sodium bicarbonate if used by itself.
dear claudia
Thank you very much for your answer.
I have another question to ask. Does magnesium bicarbonate have the same effect as sodium bicarbonate in alkalizing the body?
Hi Jazza,
Since magnesium is generally alkalinizing itself, the magnesium bicarbonate would have more alkalizing ability than sodium bicarbonate….though both are excellent for alkalinization.
Hey there,i have cystic fibrosis with phseudomonas fungus in my sputum. I also suffer with asthma, how do you suggest i use this? Kerry Rowe
Kerry,
You would benefit from Dr. Sircus’ full protocol including sodium bicarbonate, iodine and magesium , transdermal therapy. Please consider a consultation with him to discuss this further. In general, bicarbonate can be used in baths, nebulized and added to drinking water.
Hello, and thanks for all the useful information.
I read elsewhere that combining the juice of a lemon or lime with sodium bicarb is more beneficial than the bicarb alone. Can you confirm or comment?
Thanks, Rick
Hi Rick,
It can be more beneficial, and is used for many things. Here is some information on this and recipes that I found on the net:
The Lemon Bicarbonate Formula
This simple formula will normalized many biological parameters, pH, ORP, phosphates, bicarbonates and antioxidants of vitamin C. A potential miracle water. One whole lemon freshly squeezed. Keep adding baking soda slowly bit by bit until the fizz stops. Then you will add water to one half glass. This is often taken twice a day. To be taken once in the morning and once before bedtime on an empty stomach.
The Lime Bicarbonate Formula
Same as above, but use one whole lime freshly squeezed. Keep adding baking soda slowly bit by bit until the fizz stops. Then you will add water to one half glass. This is often taken either twice a day on an empty stomach, once in the morning and once before bedtime.
Note: Basically, lemon/lime juice idea is also good for people who fear some sodium retention issues. Since the lemon is already high on potassium, adding the sodium to neutralize the acid along the way will also create a sodium potassium balance.
For People with Sodium Issues and Want to Alkalize
1/8 teaspoon of baking soda 1/16 teaspoon of potassium bicarbonate 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid. Add water to 1/2 glass of water. Take this twice a day once in the morning and once in the evening on an empty stomach. This is done to avoid diarrhea problems, if taken along with food.
For People with Sodium Issues and Want to Alkalize and Normalize Many Biological Parameters: One whole freshly squeezed lemon (or lime) and keep adding the bicarbonate until the fizz stops. The bicarbonate is made of 50/50, sodium bicarbonate and potassium bicarbonate. Sorry, sodium must always be there to achieve somewhat of a sodium/potassium balance. Take this twice a day once in the morning and once in the evening on an empty stomach. This is done to avoid diarrhea problems, if taken along with food.
IMPORTANT:
To make these alkalizing formulas work, it is necessary that you drink plenty of water while you are eating any food. The water you drink will allow the food to be properly pH neutralized so that there are no “pockets” of acid that exist. Chewing and eating slowly is another thing that helps.
Make sure the last meal of the day is a light meal so the body doesn’t need to do extra work while it is resting during the night. http://altmedsales.com/index.php?target=pages&page_id=Baking_Soda_Formulations
But make sure you measure your pH daily and don’t over-alkalinize!
