Healing the Kidneys with Sodium Bicarbonate

image

Sodium bicarbonate is not only an excellent agent for natural chemotherapy, bringing as it does higher O2 levels through increased alkalinity to the cells, it is also one of the most basic medicines we have for kidney disease. New research by British scientists at the Royal London Hospital shows that sodium bicarbonate can dramatically slow the progress of chronic kidney disease.[1] We don’t need a thousand years of tests to understand something as simple as water and it is quite the same with bicarbonate, which is always present in the best drinking waters.

Bicarbonate acts to stimulate the
ATPase by acting directly on it.
[2]

The simple household product used for baking, cleaning, bee stings, treating asthma, cancer and acid indigestion is so effective in treating kidney disease that it prevents patients from having to be put on kidney machines. The findings have been published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. Bicarbonate is a truly strong universal concentrated nutritional medicine that works effectively in many clinical situations that we would not normally think of. It is a prime emergency room and intensive care medicine that can save a person’s life in a heartbeat and it is also a supermarket item that you can take right off the shelf and use for more things than one can imagine – including diaper rash.

Dr. SK Hariachar, a nephrologist who oversees the Renal Hypertension Unit in Tampa Florida stated, upon seeing the research on bicarbonate and kidney disease, ”I am glad to see confirmation of what we have known for so long.  I have been treating my patients with bicarbonate for many years in attempts to delay the need for dialysis, and now we finally have a legitimate study to back us up. Not only that, we have the added information that some people already on dialysis can reverse their condition with the use of sodium bicarbonate”.

John, a dialysis technician at the same center as Dr. Hariachar, who used to be on dialysis himself for 2 years as a result of kidney failure, had his kidneys miraculously start functioning to the point where dialysis was no longer needed. He states that he was prescribed oral doses of sodium bicarbonate throughout his treatment, and still takes it daily to prevent recurrences of kidney failure. Dr. Hariachar maintains though, that not everyone will be helped by taking bicarbonate. He says that those patients who have difficulty excreting acids, even with dialysis using a bicarbonate dialysate bath, that, “oral bicarbonate makes all the difference.”

Kidneys Produce Bicarbonate

The exocrine section of the pancreas has been greatly ignored in the treatment of diabetes even though its impairment is a well documented condition. The pancreas is primarily responsible for the production of enzymes and bicarbonate necessary for normal digestion of food. Bicarbonate is so important for protecting the kidneys that even the kidneys get into the act of producing bicarbonate and now we know the common denominator between diabetes and kidney disease. When the body is hit with reductions in bicarbonate output by these two organs,’ acid conditions build and then entire body physiology begins to go south. Likewise when acid buildup outstrips these organs normal bicarbonate capacity cellular deterioration begins.

The kidneys alone produce about two hundred
and fifty grams (about half a pound) of bicarbonate
per day in an attempt to neutralize acid in the body.

The kidneys monitor and control the acidity or “acid-base” (pH) balance of the blood. If the blood is too acidic, the kidney makes bicarbonate to restore the bloods pH balance. If the blood is too alkaline, then the kidney excretes bicarbonate into the urine to restore the balance. Acid-base balance is the net result of two processes, first, the removal of bicarbonate subsequent to hydrogen ion production from the metabolism of dietary constituents; second, the synthesis of “new” bicarbonate by the kidney.[3]

It is considered that normal adults eating ordinary Western diets have chronic, low-grade acidosis which increases with age. This excess acid, or acidosis, is considered to contribute to many diseases and to contribute to the aging process. Acidosis occurs often when the body cannot produce enough bicarbonate ions (or other alkaline compounds) to neutralize the acids in the body formed from metabolism and drinking highly acid drinks like Coke, Pepsi and we are even seeing reports on bottled mineral water being way too acidic.

Acid-buffering by means of base supplementation is one of the major roles of dialysis. Bicarbonate concentration in the dialysate (solution containing water and chemicals (electrolytes) that passes through the artificial kidney to remove excess fluids and wastes from the blood, also called “bath.”) should be personalized in order to reach a midweek pre-dialysis serum bicarbonate concentration of 22 mmol/l.[4] Use of sodium bicarbonate in dialysate has been shown in studies to better control some metabolic aspects and to improve both treatment tolerance and patients’ life quality. Bicarbonate dialysis, unlike acetate-free biofiltration, triggers mediators of inflammation and apoptosis.[5]

One of the main reasons we become acid is from over-consumption of protein. Eating meat and dairy products may increase the risk of prostate cancer, research suggests.[6] We would find the same for breast and other cancers as well. Conversely mineral deficiencies are another reason and when you combine high protein intake with decreasing intake of minerals you have a disease in the making through lowering of pH into highly acidic conditions. When protein breaks down in our bodies they break into strong acids.

Unless a treatment actually removes acid toxins
from the body and increases oxygen, water, and
nutrients most medical interventions come to naught.

These acids must be excreted by the kidneys because they contain sulfur, phosphorus or nitrogen which cannot break down into water and carbon dioxide to be eliminated as the weak acids are. In their passage through the kidneys these strong acids must take a basic mineral with them because in this way they are converted into their neutral salts and don’t burn the kidneys on their way out. This would happen if these acids were excreted in their free acid form.

Substituting a sodium bicarbonate solution for saline
infusion prior to administration of radiocontrast
material seems to
reduce the incidence of nephropathy.[7]

Dr. Thomas P. Kennedy

American Medical Association

Bicarbonate ions neutralize the acid conditions required for chronic inflammatory reactions. Hence, sodium bicarbonate is of benefit in the treatment of a range of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Sodium bicarbonate is a well studied and used medicine with known effects. Sodium bicarbonate is effective in treating poisonings or overdoses from many chemicals and pharmaceutical drugs by negating their cardiotoxic and neurotoxic effects.[8] It is the main reason it is used by orthodox oncology – to mitigate the highly toxic effects of chemotherapy.

Sodium bicarbonate possesses the property of absorbing heavy
metals, dioxins and furans.
Comparison of cancer tissue with
healthy tissue from the same person shows that the cancer tissue
has a much higher concentration of toxic chemicals, pesticides, etc.

Sodium bicarbonate injection is indicated in the treatment of metabolic acidosis, which may occur in severe renal disease, uncontrolled diabetes, and circulatory insufficiency due to shock or severe dehydration, extracorporeal circulation of blood, cardiac arrest and severe primary lactic acidosis. The acid/alkaline balance is one of the most overlooked aspects of medicine. In general, the American public is heavily acid, excepting vegetarians, and even their bodies have to face increasing levels of toxic exposure, which help turn the body to acidic pH conditions.

Human and animal reports suggest that hypertonic sodium bicarbonate may be effective therapy for numerous agents possessing sodium channel blocking properties, including cocaine, quinidine, procainamide, flecainide, mexiletine, bupivacaine, and others.

  • Mark Sircus said:

The Baking soda you use should be aluminum free. Both Arm and Hammer and Bob’s Red Mill are aluminum free and readily available. I’m not sure about other brands that might be sold in other countries……..check the label and write to the manufacturer if necessary to find out.

Often people confuse baking “powder” with baking “soda”. These are not the same thing and baking powder used to have added aluminum and other ingredeints. But generally baking soda is pure with no additives.

Keep a watch on your blood pressure and keep in mind not to use bicarbonate over the long term. Studies have shown that sodium bicarbonate does not have the same effects on blood pressure as sodium chloride does.

Change your diet to a more alkalinizing diet which will not have negative effects on your blood pressure. LL Magnetic clay is my preferred source for Ancient Minerals magnesium oil or flakes. http://www.magneticclay.com/

Use magnesium chloride transdermally to keep blood pressure in control. Get some Ancient Minerals to add to a bath twice a week.

    Thank you.

Vernon without kinowing more about you and what you are trying to accomplish and what other problems you have, I will not advise this. Sorry but there are possible negative effects of taking too much bicarbonate daily. The amount you are talking about probably would not hurt but more information is needed. And you should let your pH be your guide if alkalinazation is the result you want, but only if you change diet to a more alkaline diet for long term results. Do not rely on baking soda alone.

The bicarbonate of soda and the magnesium therapy both sound great but my husband has had kidney damage from lithium and risperdal. He was hospitalized 12 days in ICU this last time(May 2010) and 7 days of dialysis. I’m wondering if bicarbonate of soda will help him. He has proteinuria and his creatinine levels are at about 2.0 now. When he had the metabolic collapse from the risperdal and neuroleptic malignant syndrome his blood was really acid and they used bicarbonate of soda in ER. Could an alkaline approach stave off the loss of kidney function? I believe he had renal tubular issues from the toxicity of meds. Also, they say to avoid magnesium because the kidneys can’t clear it but yet they prescribed 500mg calcium but no magnesium. Would using the liquid on the skin avoid the kidney issue and clearance? So scared of the pharmaceuticals they generously prescribe and the damage they have caused my husband.

Cheryl, when there is kidney damage the body cannot get rid of excess magnesium, no matter if it is taken orally or obtained by putting it on the skin. Kidney problems are the biggest contraindication to using magnesium and should only be done under medical supervision with frequent testing.

Bicarbonate definitely is helpful in renal tubular issues, but Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome is a very serious consequence of the use of neuroleptic drugs. Your husband has unfortunately had some organ damage, hopefully only temporary, but you must be very careful not to overstress anything until everything stabilizes once again. Please make changes only under the supervision of your health care provider. You may want to consider a personal consultation with Dr. Sircus. If so you can contact Luciana Valentim at : [email protected]

If it helps any, I have personally seen people fully recover from this disastrous consequence of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. But we all need to be aware of these kinds of dangers from the medicines being prescribed to us today. Unfortunately little thought and little oversight is given after these drugs are prescribed.

I hope your husband’s health improves rapidly and when he is ready he can get onto magnesium chloride. He may be prescribed sodium bicarbonate even sooner.

Sodium Bicarbonate has been shown to lower the progression of kidney disease in diabetics, even preventing dialysis. You need to cosnult with Dr. Sircus for specific dosages for your situation. But generally people over 60 are advised not to take more than 3 half tsp. of sodium bicarb/day. You may take more with Dr. orders. You should also be on supervised intakes of magnesium as it aids in diabetes. You should be taking Co1q10 and eating an alkaline diet.

I am 26 years old and have been on peritoneal dialysis for 1 year after I lost kidney function due to a severe bout of TTP. I have also had lupus nephritis for 8 years prior to that. Is it ok for me to take magnesium bicarbonate? And if so, how much do you recommend I start with. By the way, I still produce about 600 ml of urine daily. Thank you for your response!

  • IMVA Staff said:

    Dear Caroline,

You are in a very difficult predicament. With kidney functioning so low that you need peritoneal dialysis you must be very careful with magnesium intake, as you can become toxic from it very easily. Reduced kidney function is the one contraindication to using magnesium. Please do this only under a qualified health practitioners supervision, with frequent testing of magesium levels. The fact that you still have some urine output does not ensure that you are having proper excretion of anything (toxins or excesses) of anything but fluid, but since you are receiving peritoneal dialysis, some magnesium can probably carefully be managed by your body.

Your dialysis fluid may need to change if you are supplementing with magnesium, to ensure the excess amount is removed from your body.

However bicarbonate supplementation may be very helpful to you. You should work closely with a healthcare provider to determine the proper dosage or you can engage in consultation with Dr. Sircus about this. Contact Luciana at [email protected] if you would like to arrange an appointment.

Long term use can be, but was not found to be associated with in creased blood pressure, so keep a check on this.

    Dear Michael,

Its hard to say how sodium bicarbonate would help your mother at this age, without much more information. Of course there is the possibility but it would have to be under medical supervision. She has a number of problems that might affect the treatment. Her blood pressure and fluid intake need to be carefully monitored as well as her heart condition, and magnesium which is generally helpful for heart conditions, is contraindicated in remal failure. Difficulty swallowing may prevent adequate intake of food and fluids. Bicarbonate may however, give her some better quality of life, but please let her doctors know if you are going to try this. It’s difficult to say if bicarbonate would reverse the kidney failure at this point and with the other problems she has.

After any doctors and no good answers I am looking for an alternative approach in use in conjunction with my maintenance medication. Would sodium bicarbonate be useful in lowering my uric acid level and maintaining a proper pH? And if it is at what dosage? I have read that 2000 mg/day would be optimum, what are your thoughts?

Some feel it should only be taken at a lesser dosage than you mention and only for two weeks starting at the beginning of a gout attack and without the other medically prescribed medicines.

    Dear Mercy,

What you describe is taking a total of 4.5 tsp (total) within a 6 hour period of time for stomach pains. This only exceeds the recommended daily intake by about 1 tsp.
It would be important to know what your pH was after taking this much baking soda in such a short period of time. Sodium bicarbonate ususally does not cause bleeding in the stomach or intestines, nor does it cause delays in menstrual periods to my knowledge.

You need a much more thorough evaluation by a qualified health care practioner. It could just be coincidence that these problems come together at the same time or it could be something more serious. It sounds like your stomach pains came first. Sodium bicarbonate sometimes will cause a bloated feeling and gassiness, and possibly diarrhea, but the effects shouldn’t be lasting this long. ( you said this started “early last month”).

Your question on your first post was:

I don’t want to get any worse than I am! Has anyone had their GFR improve with this treatment? I’ve been scared to death over all of this. I had a normal blood test 30 days before using this drug that damaged my kidneys. I have been very depressed over this situation. Would love to hear encouraging comments from someone who has gotten better. Thanks!

So I assumed wrongly that you were not addressing either me or Dr. Sircus directly, but were addressing other IMVA readers and I guess I assumed that if someone had gotten better they would respond. Unfortunately the sodium bicarbonate treatment for kidney failure is a fairly new research finding and we don’t yet have many reports of people who this has worked for. However you should definitely consider getting on the sodium bicarbonate treatment for your kidneys, if you have not already done so. You must have read the research we found showing that people in the study got better on the sodium bicarbonate treatment and even were able to avoid dialysis?

And it sounds as if it YOU who should be suing the manufacturer of the drug given to you, not the other way around. Don’t be afraid of these people!!! They have hurt you tremendously.

Please read Dr. Sircus’ book on Sodium Bicarbonate, and on the website is an essay on its use in kidney disorder. I guess I had assumed you were awarre of this already. http://sodiumbicarbonate.imva.info/index.php/kidney-medicine/healing-the-kidneys-with-sodium-bicarbonate/

    Dear Claudia,
Thank you so much for your response. I do appreciate hearing from you. I feel so desperate and have this terrible need for support. No support groups in my area. My situation is pretty rare, going from a normal blood test to kidney failure, having no diabetes or heart disease. Although many many people were harmed by this drug, I don’t know who they are. I did sue the manufacturer as did many others. So many that we were all put into an MDL (like a class action). Our settlement was very small for what they did to us and pay out is coming in small amounts. It was just enough to help with medical and that was it. My health insurance alone just for me is now over 10,000 a year, becaue now I have a pre-existing condition. They got away with murder as far as I am concerned and some people did die. I am so scared about what I have read happens to people with kidney failure. Thank God I found your website and others about the “baking soda”. This has given me a little hope. I started drinking it right away. I am reading everything on your website and everything else I can find. I wish there was a support group in my area for people like me, not on dialysis, but close. I tried reading on the Davita website but it just scares me to death, people all seem to be on dialysis already, with so many problems. Maybe I’ll run across something someday for people in stages 3 & 4 of kidney failure. If you know of any websites please post them. I’m just amazed at everything I have been reading. I’m going to be asking my Dr and NP why they aren’t telling kidney patients about this! I thank you and the staff and Dr Sircus for helping us. Thank God people like you are making us aware and helping. We need all the help and encouragment we can get. I am also a big believer in natural things, remedies, etc. I have no faith in prescription drugs and will not take anything from big pharma that I can avoid. I thank all of you again for your website and helping people in need.

    Missy,

Make sure that you also cut out ALL the fluoride you might be taking in….there is also a great deal of information out there about how fluoride can tip people over the edge to dialysis…….

And get on Co-Q10 which has also been shown to reverse kidney failure in some studies.

    Dear Claudia,

I use a lot of home remedies and baking soda is one of them. I have kidney stones, and the pain that comes with them. I was told to use 1/2 tsp for the pain. Pressingly enough it works, but, is it doing anything about the stones itself, or is it doing more damage then good? I’ve tried Chanca Piedra ” stone breaker”, but it didn’t work. Frankly is tasted like strong tea with lots of sugar. So far baking soda seems to ease the pain and I can finely get some sleep. My only concern is if the baking soda is doing anything about the stones itself or just the pain? Thank you for any info you can give me on this matter.

    Hi Kathy,

It depends on how your new kidney is functioning at this point. I”ve also had a transplant (April, 2011) and I use sodium bicarbonate fairly regularly with my MD’s knowledge and consent. You should still attempt to keep your pH in the alkaline range and check your pH daily to see how it runs. The diet you are on is good. If you are in alkaline range on a regular basis there may be no need to take bicarbonate daily, better to stay alkaline with diet. But like I said , it would also depend on your kidney function and how well you are excreting acids. And yes, the bicarb could interact with the immunesuppressant drugs you are probably taking….so checkkwith your doctor on that! Congratulations on your transplant!!

    Hi Teena,

Sodium Bicarbonate can help with both passing the stones and with the pain. Many people also recommend the necessity of magnesium in treating and preventing kidney stones. Stones usually form in magnesium deficient people. Another remedy that many have been helped by is the use of lemon juice (fresh)and olive oil in water: Mix 2 oz of olive oil and 2 oz of lemon juice, drink it straight down and follow with a large glass of water at the first sign of stone pain. The stone(s) will pass within 24 hours. This is the recommendation from Earth Clinic.

But make sure your magnesium levels are up to par no matter which you try…..mag will also help with the pain.

Hello, I am a 58 yr old lady with type 2 diabetes, low thyroid, fibromyalgia and ostearthritis since the 90s. … I have always taken 1/2 a teas. baking soda for acid reflux/heartburn/bloating. It works like nothing else. I want to prevent kidney problems as my diabetes is barely controlled w/insulin and pills. I,m 60 lbs overweight. I,m 5’3” (inches). I have had one big kidney stone. Do not ever want another. I take magnesium for terrible muscle spasms in feet and under my ribs. I feel adding baking soda to my water is a good idea…..

I am actually asking for my husband who had osteomyelitis( spine infection) and was on IV antobiotics for 6 months in 2005. Now he has violent vomitting episodes and terrible acid reflux. He’s taking 40 mg Prilosec daily and seems to be getting worse! I would love for him to get off the prilosec! But he refuses to take baking soda! His P/H is very acidic. Mine is alkaline. Should I sneak some in his water? I have before and he got better but refuses to believe it was the soda. I,m very scared for him!!!..;(

I read all the comments and deeply appreciate your work and the comments of the patients.
    God bless us all!

    Bee,

Its best to be very honest with your husband and not “sneak” substances on him. Try to educate him on the benefits of baking soda and magnesium in Dr. Sircus’ protocol. This is such a difficult situation when the s.o. doesn’t agree.

Both of you might benefit greatly by more regular use of magnesium and is your husband on any probiotics? These might help to restore the normal flora of his digestive tract and help to decrease the episodes of vomiting. Make sure there is no other disease process going on that might be causing this. LL’s magnetic clay co . can provide an excellent probiotic (Prescript Assist) along with edible clay, as well as magnesium oil, which is better than any oral form of magnesium. http://www.magneticclay.com/

Hi my friend who is 39 was told that he has got Myeloma. I was wondering if talking Sodium Bicarbonate will help him from suffering more discomfort then necessaries.
Would really appreciate you thoughts on this.

    Mina,

Sodium bicarbonate would absolutely help your friend. Read about sodium bicarbonat’s use in cancer in the e-book available here: http://publications.imva.info/index.php/e-books/sodium-bicarbonate-rich-man-s-poor-man-s-cancer-treatment-e-book.html

Your friend would also benefit from using magnesium oil and the other supplements Dr. Sircus recommends for cancer treatment.
